Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) was a celebrated Italian opera composer and conductor. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Italian opera, with his works having a lasting influence on the genre. Mascagni's most famous opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana' was a huge success when it premiered in 1890 and is still regularly performed today.
