Because It felt like it’s been a while since we held a contest, and we kind of missed the excitement and thrill of watching so many of you talented creators deliver such creative videos, we decided to launch a new competition!

Welcome to the SFX Challenge!

The Artlist SFX library

Back in May 2020, the high-quality sound effects library was released on the platform to help creators up the production value of their video. After all, sound quality is as important. If not more, than a video’s visual quality.

So with that said, we wanted to test your sound design prowess, and to make it worth your while we recruited some of the best gear manufacturers out there as sponsors: ZhiyunNANLITEAdam AudioRØDEFocusrite and Lume Cube.

Here are the rules for the SFX Challenge:

  • Create a video with SFX and music from Artlist that’s between 45 seconds and 1 minute.
  • Upload your video to Instagram as a carousel post in the following format:
    • Timeline breakdown of your video with the music and the SFX
    • Timeline breakdown with SFX only
    • The whole scene (music+sfx) without the timeline
    • Use the hashtag #ALSFXChallenge
    • Tag @artlist.io

Bonus points go to those who upload a behind-the-scenes breakdown to your YouTube channel or Instagram with #ALSFXChallenge in the title

So sign up and start creating. If you have a free trial or you’re on a music-only plan, you will receive a free SFX pack which you should use in your video. If you’re already a subscriber, start downloading your sounds.

The Rules

You can create any video you like, just tell a compelling story.

For your entry to be eligible, you must tag @artlist.io and use the hashtag #ALSFXChallenge in the first line of the description.

If you’re not sure how to create a timeline breakdown of your video, here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

  1. Record your screen (we recommend OBS for that). Set up your timeline so that all of the sound effects are seen clearly and play the video.
  2. Create a new sequence (1200×1200 or 1080×1350).
  3. Import the screen recording and the final original video into the project
  4. Drag the screen recording into the timeline and position it so that the timeline is on the bottom half of the composition.
  5. Use the ‘crop’ effect to crop the top half of the screen recording so that you’re left with only the timeline
  6. Drag the final video into the timeline and position it in the top half of the composition
  7. Make final sizing/cropping adjustments to get it just right

Submit your entry by May 5 at 6:00 PM GMT +3.

3 Winners will be chosen based on how they use SFX and music to create a compelling video. The judging criteria are creativity, storytelling and technical ability.

The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges from the Artlist Creative, Audio and SFX teams.

Bonus points will go to creators who upload a behind-the-scenes video of their process to their YouTube channel or Instagram page with the #ALSFXChallenge hashtag in its title.

There’s no limit to the number of SFX you can include in your video, and for those who want to use Artlist footage, you’re more than welcome.

If you’re not already signed up for Artlist, you can sign up for a free trial account and download watermarked clips to use in your video. Or, you can get a full subscription and have unlimited access to all that stunning story-driven footage, which you can use in any type of video, even commercials.

Hope you enjoy this one, we can’t wait to see your clever, awesome-sounding creations. Stay creative!
